Resist Satan: October 9, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR FRIDAY OCTOBER 9, 2015.

RESIST SATAN

DEFINITION:

To withstand; strive against; actively oppose.
SCRIPTURE:

Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7.

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. I John 4:4.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

The power to defeat Satan in our lives is available to every believer in Jesus Christ as Savior. Jesus triumphed over Satan at the cross. This was a victory that contained no hint of defeat. The good news is that we can declare victory over Satan in our daily battles because we are indwelt with the triumphant power of Jesus Christ through the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. By calling on the divine power of God we have the authority to resist Satan and all his demons.

Satan is very much alive and he is actively working in this world but God who is in us by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is far greater than Satan. How do we resist the devil?

First, we must claim the name of Jesus by praying in Jesus name. When we use the name of Jesus we are doing what He has called us to do. We are to act with authority over Satan by demonstrating that we are in Christ.

Secondly, we are to claim the blood of Jesus which will give us His protection. The blood is our protection and the basis of our redemption. You can read further in Matthew 26:28; Ephesians 1:7 and Hebrews 9: 11-28 for assurance of the shed blood of Jesus. The blood of Jesus Christ paid the price of our sins and eternally broke the power of Satan over us.

Thirdly, we need to claim the Word of God. Jesus put an end to Satan’s words of temptation by quoting scripture. He confronted the enemy with the Word of God and we must do the same. It does no good to argue with Satan, just quote the Word of God and you will silence him.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
PRAYER:

Thank You that I have the power, because of You, to defeat the enemy’s temptations in my life. Thank You for your almighty, supernatural power that is available to me. Help me to honor You this day and may I resist the devil by the power of Your Holy Spirit.

Detours: October 8, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR THURSDAY OCTOBER 8, 2015.

DETOURS

DEFINITION:

Roundabout course.
SCRIPTURE:

The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your love, O Lord, endures forever; do not abandon the works of your hands. Psalm 138:8.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Detours are annoying when we are driving because it requires us to take a roundabout course that takes us much longer to get to where we want to go. How many times have you been very close to your goal and something puts the object of your pursuit even further away from your grasp? It is this kind of detour that makes you doubt whether you will ever succeed in your efforts.

No matter how many detours you face in your lifetime remember, as the verse we have put above says, the Lord will accomplish His purpose for us.

We read about Jacob who worked for Laban for seven years to marry Rachel and then was tricked by Laban and found himself married to Leah. He then had to work for Laban another seven years in order to marry Rachel.

We remember David who was anointed as a young lad to be King of Israel, but did not become king until years later because King Saul desired to kill David to prevent him from being king.

For the disciples, it was when the Messiah they had hoped would restore the kingdom of Israel was crucified.

These were detours that were unexpected but happened for God’s purpose.

What was it for you? Was it an unexpected illness, a job that did not work out or some financial setback? Was it a conflict with your spouse or a concern for a child? It could be any number of setbacks that break your heart and crush your spirit.

Through all of these situations we, as believers, must understand that God has not failed us but has a better plan than you realize. The detour will be difficult but in due time you will say that it was definitely worth it if you have put your trust in God and yielded the direction of your life to Him to fulfill His purpose in you.

God had a better plan for Jacob. It was with Leah that Jacob and Leah had six sons that became the leaders of six of the twelve tribes of Israel. David proved to be the greatest of all the Kings of Israel. For the disciples, it was three days after the crucifixion that they realized that the kingdom the Messiah was ushering in was a greater and more powerful Kingdom than the Kingdom of Israel because it was the eternal Kingdom of God.

There may be detours in life, but God has a purpose for you and He will fulfill His purposes as promised.

PRAYER:

Help me to evaluate the goals that I am pursuing as to whether they have more importance in my life than my relationship with you? Help me to trust You to show me what direction I need to go. Help me to be faithful to You so that You will accomplish Your purpose for me.

October 7, 2015

Best: October 7, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 7, 2015.

BEST

DEFINITION:

Superlative or good; greater; one’s utmost.
SCRIPTURE:

But earnestly desire the greater gifts, and I will show you a still more excellent way. I Corinthians 12:31.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; but fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce; so your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine. Proverbs 3:5-10.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Often, when we are presented with choices of multiple deserts on a buffet table, the one that we thought looked the best was not the best.

We all have to make many choices in life. None is more important than choosing the best path in life to follow.

The verses in Proverbs 3:5-10 give us a godly compass for our life. It does not make any difference who you are, what you do, where you live, or what your vocation is, this concise trustworthy compass will help you find God’s best for your life.

The first point on this spiritual compass is trusting in God. This is the most important key to finding God’s best for your life. You must have faith in the Lord to control every area of your life. Remember He knows all things, He is all powerful, and He loves you perfectly. He will arrange every circumstance in your life to work out for your best if you trust Him with all your heart.

The second point of this spiritual compass gives us three requirements to receive God’s best in our life.

First, you are to rely on God only and not on your own understanding. There are many things we do not understand with our limited knowledge but relying on God with His profound wisdom will keep us on the right path.

Second, you must respect Him as your God by standing in awe before Him, worship Him, and obey Him. We are not to be wise in our own eyes and think we know better than God. Wisdom starts with fearing God and He is the only one who has the authority to govern every area of your life.

Third, God promises to make our paths straight. He will guide us through every step we take and will make our life easier. He will bring health to our body. We need to trust His clear guidance to lead us to live a healthy and wholesome way of life.

Fourth, we are to honor God by giving back to Him some of the wealth He blesses us with, including time, talent and treasures. We should give God our best. First fruits, as in Proverbs3:9 above, refers to the best portion of the harvest. God deserves our best.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
PRAYER:

Help me to honor You this day as my Lord. Help me to put my complete trust in You and obey You in every area of my life. Help me to live a Godly life so I can enjoy life at its best.

October 6, 2015

Peace: October 6, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR TUESDAY OCTOBER 6, 2015.

PEACE

DEFINITION:

Calm and quiet; freedom from troubling emotions or thoughts.
SCRIPTURE:

I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

How do you maintain a sense of peace and spiritual balance when trials strike you. From time to time it is good to sit back and take stock as to how you handle difficulties when they come your way.

The verse above from Psalms 4 was written by David in a time of great distress. David was distressed as a result of his son’s betrayal and rebellion. Absalom had secretly and cunningly won over the hearts and support of a large number of the people and set himself up as king. Absalom was coming after David with his army so David had to flee for his life. The stress was causing David to be restless and awake at night.

David knew from past experience where to seek peace from his distress and find relief. In Psalm 4:1 David prays and asks God for relief from his stress. He prays confidently because he knows the Lord hears when we call to Him (verse 3). In verse 8 he writes that he will be down in peace and will sleep well because he knew the Lord would keep him safe throughout the night. God wants this same kind of confidence and peace to take root in us just like it had with David.

We can have peace with God when we have a close relationship with Him. We are reminded of the old song we always sang in church written by Helen Lemmel. It was, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.” This song contained a vital and exciting truth: an unshakeable peace is available to all who turn the eyes of their heart to Jesus.

Chances are that when adversity strikes your life one of the first thoughts you have is why? Then how do you respond? You can fret or rely on your decision making. But the best reaction is to turn the eyes of your heart to Jesus, the one who holds all comfort and security firmly within His grasp.

If you face anxiety in your life over an issue, first of all you need to recognize what anxiety is the complete opposite of peace. Anxiety has the ability to leave us helplessly bundled up in worry and fear. If we cave in to this pressure we lose our spiritual focus and mindset and we lose our ability to function. The only key to overcoming anxiety is found in the presence of God.

Now read the other verse we have put above from the book of John. What would you give to experience every day the peace that God can give you? You need to be willing to lay down your anger, fear and frustrations that haunt you. God knows the hurt you are feeling and if you will trust Him He will remind you that he has not forgotten you and stands ready to heal your troubled heart.

The safest place for you to be when trials come your way is in the arms of Jesus. David had a divine, unshakeable peace within his heart that God would protect him and fulfill His promises to him. God wants you to have that same peace.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
PRAYER:

My prayer today is that Your peace may invade my heart so that I can put every issue, large or small, that I face into Your hands. Thank You for Your promise to keep me and deliver me into the Father’s loving arms.

October 5, 2015

Anxiety: October 5, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 5, 2015.

ANXIETY

DEFINITION:

Worry; uneasiness; fear of possible harm or misfortune; distress.
SCRIPTURE:

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

God did not design you to be anxious or worried. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told the crowds, “Do not worry then, saying what we will eat? or what will we drink? or what will we wear for clothing? -- Do not worry about tomorrow.”

Most of our worries involve basic things like housing, food, children and even what others think about us. Underlying these concerns is the strength (or lack of) our faith and trust in God. Do we really believe God will do for us what He has promised to do in His Word?

If you assume you are the one who is in charge of your life and make all of your decisions based on your feelings, then you will battle anxiety and fear daily. However, if you understand the ways of the Lord and have a personal relationship with Him, then you will know He is in charge and He cares enough about you to take care of every situation you face.

If you say that you have a personal relationship with the Lord and worry and doubt in His goodness, you will never have the peace in your heart that He wants you to experience. One of the keys for you to consider is to take time each day to thank Him for His goodness and acknowledge Him as your provider.

Years ago our children had a hamster. We would watch the hamster run and run on a wheel in the cage it was in and getting nowhere. This is exactly what anxiety will do to you if you do not put everything in the Lord’s hands. As fearful thoughts come your way and fill your mind, you begin to run faster trying to meet the demands of others or to prevent an uncertain disaster in your life. You will never gain complete control over the situations in life that you face because God is the One who is solely in control of all things including all things in your life.

Worry and anxiety never gets us anywhere.

If you are bogged down with a heavy load of anxiety, try God’s solutions:

In Psalm 37:4 it reads, “Delight yourself in the Lord.” To delight in the Lord means to take joy in spending time with Him.

In Psalm 37:5 it reads, “Commit your way to the Lord and trust in Him.” To commit your way to the Lord means to put everything into His hands (your life, your family, your job, and your possessions) under His control and guidance.

In I Peter 5:6 we read, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand.” Humbly obey God and keep His commandments.

In I Peter 5:7 it reads, “Cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you.”

Jesus wants you to cast all of your cares upon Him and then leave them with Him. Take your problems every day to Jesus in prayer and say: Here, Jesus, take my problems. You have the answers. I trust You to show me what to do knowing that You will take care of the consequences.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
PRAYER:

Help me to end the anxiety cycle in my life by learning to cast my anxiety on You and putting everything into Your hands. Help me to be faithful to You and take joy in spending time in Your presence and the reading of Your Word and in communication with You through prayer.
