Anxiety: October 5, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 5, 2015.

ANXIETY

DEFINITION:

Worry; uneasiness; fear of possible harm or misfortune; distress.
SCRIPTURE:

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

God did not design you to be anxious or worried. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told the crowds, “Do not worry then, saying what we will eat? or what will we drink? or what will we wear for clothing? -- Do not worry about tomorrow.”

Most of our worries involve basic things like housing, food, children and even what others think about us. Underlying these concerns is the strength (or lack of) our faith and trust in God. Do we really believe God will do for us what He has promised to do in His Word?

If you assume you are the one who is in charge of your life and make all of your decisions based on your feelings, then you will battle anxiety and fear daily. However, if you understand the ways of the Lord and have a personal relationship with Him, then you will know He is in charge and He cares enough about you to take care of every situation you face.

If you say that you have a personal relationship with the Lord and worry and doubt in His goodness, you will never have the peace in your heart that He wants you to experience. One of the keys for you to consider is to take time each day to thank Him for His goodness and acknowledge Him as your provider.

Years ago our children had a hamster. We would watch the hamster run and run on a wheel in the cage it was in and getting nowhere. This is exactly what anxiety will do to you if you do not put everything in the Lord’s hands. As fearful thoughts come your way and fill your mind, you begin to run faster trying to meet the demands of others or to prevent an uncertain disaster in your life. You will never gain complete control over the situations in life that you face because God is the One who is solely in control of all things including all things in your life.

Worry and anxiety never gets us anywhere.

If you are bogged down with a heavy load of anxiety, try God’s solutions:

In Psalm 37:4 it reads, “Delight yourself in the Lord.” To delight in the Lord means to take joy in spending time with Him.

In Psalm 37:5 it reads, “Commit your way to the Lord and trust in Him.” To commit your way to the Lord means to put everything into His hands (your life, your family, your job, and your possessions) under His control and guidance.

In I Peter 5:6 we read, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand.” Humbly obey God and keep His commandments.

In I Peter 5:7 it reads, “Cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you.”

Jesus wants you to cast all of your cares upon Him and then leave them with Him. Take your problems every day to Jesus in prayer and say: Here, Jesus, take my problems. You have the answers. I trust You to show me what to do knowing that You will take care of the consequences.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
PRAYER:

Help me to end the anxiety cycle in my life by learning to cast my anxiety on You and putting everything into Your hands. Help me to be faithful to You and take joy in spending time in Your presence and the reading of Your Word and in communication with You through prayer.
