Persecution: October 11, 2013

TODAY’S WORD FOR FRIDAY OCTOBER 11, 2013.

PERSECUTION

DEFINITION:

Subject to harassing or cruel treatment as a result of religion, race, or beliefs; to annoy or trouble persistently; oppress.

SCRIPTURE:

Bless those that persecute you. Romans 12:14.

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven Matthew 5:11-12.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

When we think of persecution we think of one being killed or martyred for the cause of Christ. But there are other issues that are considered persecution. Some may think that persecution is living in an unstable an undesirable home situation, being talked to critically by a peer or friend or being hurt by somebody physically or mentally.

Teenagers today feel they are being "persecuted" by peers at their school who do not let them into their "group." Being accepted today is vital to children, youth and even adults. When one is not accepted they feel persecuted. Bullying is persecution and a growing problem on school campuses.

Many times non-acceptance comes as a result of one's strong stand for Christian standards and beliefs. Christians are often ridiculed and discriminated against. Jesus taught that we should consider ourselves blessed when we are persecuted if it is because of our faith. If this is so, we are not alone. Jesus certainly was persecuted and so were His disciples, other prophets and many that we read about in the Old and New Testament. If we are persecuted for our faith it is an indication that we are doing what is right in God's sight and we are being faithful to our belief in the Lord.

Jesus said we are blessed when people revile and insult us, persecute us and say all kinds of evil things about us. It is difficult to feel blessed when we are persecuted, so why does Jesus say we are blessed? He tells us that it is because "great is your reward in heaven" (Matthew 5:11-12 above). The Christians life on earth is very short but the Christian will have all of eternity to enjoy his or her reward.

Recently, we read that over 70 million Christians have been martyred in the last 20 centuries because of their Christian faith. But the more startling fact is that more than 50% of these 70 million have been martyred because of their stand for Christ in just the last 60 years. Many Christians have lost jobs because of their faith. Just today we received an E-mail concerning a Christian who was fired from his TV job because of his stand against abortion and gay marriage. In many parts of the world Christian churches and homes of Christian believers are being burned to the ground.

Persecution severely tests our faith. When we consider how these martyrs were willing to suffer for their faith, we must ask ourselves how much we would be willing to suffer by standing up for our Lord and Savior. It takes great faith to stand strong in the face of persecution.

We urge you to be faithful in reading God's Word and these "Today's Word" devotionals which will help you know and understand how God wants you to deal with issues you face in life. It is only as we grow in our knowledge and understanding of God's Word that we grow in our relationship with God and with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The closer our relationship with our Lord the stronger will be our faith. Only with strong faith will we be able to endure persecution.

Here in America many feel that we are turning away from our spiritual principles that our country was founded on. One of the reasons for this, we feel, is that Christians are silent about their faith. This is just what Satan wants. He wants to silence Christians. Even though we may risk some persecution from others we need to speak up and be heard. When persecution comes are way, just remember the persecution that Jesus went through for our salvation.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Proverbs 19:17.

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.

PRAYER

Thank You Lord for what You did for me by dying on the cross. Help me to represent You today with a new fervor and drive so that others will have no doubt as to what I believe. Help me to challenge my family and Christian friends to join me in standing tall for You.

Faithfulness: October 10, 2013

TODAY’S WORD FOR THURSDAY OCTOBER 10, 2013.

FAITHFULNESS

DEFINITION:

True to one's word, promises and vows; firm in adherence; worthy of trust.

SCRIPTURE:

Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Genesis 5:24

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it.  I Corinthians 9:24

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Life is full of reversals, and we as Christians are not excluded from disappointments that make us want to give up. This is not what God wants from us. He wants faithfulness, a spirit of never quitting, to dominate our lives.

Paul challenges us in the race that is the Christian life to keep running (above verse). He gave these words to the believers in the church at Corinth. We are to run faithfully the race God has given us and should be driven by the knowledge that we run to honor our King and to receive from Him an eternal crown at the end of our race.

We have never been a couple that did a good job exercising. But for several years we committed to walk about two miles every day. It was tough for us to be faithful in doing this but Ken will admit that Dottie was the faithful one. Now it is difficult for us to walk like we did because all the aches and pains of maturing are setting in. Walking with someone leads to conversing with each other. It is through conversation that relationships are developed.

This comment about walking made us think about a man in the Bible named Enoch. There is not much written about him but in a short narrative in Genesis it says that "Enoch walked with God." Walking with God requires faithfulness and commitment. The eleventh chapter of Hebrews has been given titles such as “Faith’s Hall of Fame” and “Heroes of Faith” because it is a list of Old Testament saints along with a moving account of their faithfulness. We can be sure Enoch was faithful because he is included in this list. In Hebrews 11:5 it is written about Enoch that God rewarded him for his faithfulness. Enoch did not have to experience death. God just took him to be with Him because he walked daily with God and had an unswerving obedience to God in a corrupt culture.

We urge you to be challenged by the faithfulness of Enoch, as we are, and to renew our commitment to walk faithfully with God today in all that we do. You are headed in the right direction when you walk with God and faithfully serve Him.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Proverbs 19:17.

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.

PRAYER:

Help our family to live by the words of the song, He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am His own; and the joy we share as we tarry there none other has ever known.

Faith: October 9, 2013

TODAY’S WORD FOR WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9, 2013.

FAITH

DEFINITION:

Confidence or trust in a person or a thing; complete trust in God; loyalty or reliance on God or someone else.

SCRIPTURE:

The just shall live by faith. Habakkuk 2:4.

O you of little faith. Matthew 6:30.

Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.  Romans 10:17.

For we walk by faith, not by sight. II Corinthians 5:7.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Faith is an exciting "WORD" for us to discuss. We have listed four verses (above) because each verse has something special for us. Please read carefully each of these verses.

We live by faith every day. It is easy to believe in things we can see and touch. It is much harder to believe in things that are unseen, but we do that every day. We accept the things that are unseen by faith. Let us share with you some examples:

We cannot see air but we take air into our lungs every time we take a breath. Although we cannot see it we have evidence that it is there because of the effect air has on us, it provides us life.

When you get up in the morning you take your first step by faith. You believe by faith that the floor will hold you and by faith you assume your leg is strong enough to hold you. When you are driving your car on the road and come to a hill, you continue on by faith that the road continues on the other side although you cannot see it.

When it comes to spiritual things, we enter a relationship with Jesus by faith. This faith cannot be seen or touched but it is evidenced by the effect He has on our lives. Faith in Jesus changes ones outlook on life. When we have a relationship with God through His Son, faith becomes a shield for us. In Ephesians 6:16 it reads that above all, we are to take the shield of faith with us all the time to quench the fiery darts of the evil one, Satan.

The greater our faith the greater will be Satan’s efforts to cause our faith to waver. He will use all sorts of lies and tempting promises of pleasure to lead us astray. Just as a shield protects the body from physical harm, our sincere faith in God and our continual trust in His Word and His promises will protect us from Satan’s temptations to every sort of sin.

May we share with you this warning? If you do not experience in your life the reality of knowing Jesus, after you say that you have accepted Him as your Savior, we urge you to take a careful look at your relationship with Jesus. The apostle Paul also issues a warning to believers in verse 18 of Ephesians 6. Paul tells us to examine our prayer life. Paul warns us to stay alert with all perseverance and pray at all times. A relationship must be a heart relationship that you take by faith and not just a head relationship.

A relationship can grow only when time is spent with the one we desire to have a relationship with. To grow in our relationship with the Lord we must spend time with Him. The more time we spend reading and studying His Word the more our faith will grow and by praying at all times we will be drawn into a closer relationship with Him.

Read again the words of the writer of Romans as he wrote in Romans 10:17: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Proverbs 19:17.

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.

PRAYER:

Help me to be certain concerning my relationship with Jesus. Increase my faith so that with every step that I take this day I will be confident that You are walking by my side. May the love of Jesus abound in my life so that others see my faith by my walk and my talk.

Christian Life: October 8, 2013

TODAY’S WORD FOR TUESDAY OCTOBER 8, 2013.

CHRISTIAN LIFE

DEFINITION:

The process of living a life like Christ lived when He lived on this earth.

SCRIPTURE:

To know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:19.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

We decided on this word today because it is very noticeable that fewer people today are committed to living a Christian life then even a year ago. The reasons are many but none of the reasons are acceptable in God's sight. People seem to be too busy with "things" in their lives to read the Bible and to pray. There seems to be more peer pressure every year for both young people and adults. The life situations that people face daily are evil and godless and there is little if any evidence of our Judeo-Christian heritage having any influence.

Living a Christian life today is not easy, but God never promised us that it would be easy. God has given us a wonderful beginning to a Christian life when we accepted His salvation. It was at that time that our Christian life began. He expects us to live our Christian life, a life fully given to God, and a God-filled life.

In the 1800's there was a town in Texas named TEXLINE that was a thriving center with several thousand residents. It was built because of the commerce that came to them as a result of a railroad line. In the year 2000 most of the shops were closed and the population had dwindled to less than 400. On the internet it says it had a city limits sign at both ends of the town and literally nothing in between except a few houses away from the main street.

This reminds us of what kind of waste our Christian life can be if we choose not to give God our whole life to serve Him. From the time of our salvation (the "now entering" city limits sign) till we go to be with the Lord (the "now leaving" city limits sign) what is in between. For many people their Christian life is like a town that has dwindled to nothing. They have never sought to grow in their knowledge of the Lord. They are missing out on all that God desires to give them and all that God could do through them.

A rich and full life is available to all who believe in and will serve Jesus. In the verse we have put above the Apostle Paul prayed that all believers would "be filled with the fullness of God." Paul lived an abundant life and Jesus said while He was here on this earth that He wanted us to know life "abundantly" (John 10:10).

There is a two- sided reality to the Christian life. The minute we accept Jesus as our Savior we are justified through our faith and made right with God. Our salvation is complete through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Through our salvation we have peace with God.

But the second side of the Christian life is that we still must face the temptations of this evil world and the problems of life. God uses the trials and temptations we face daily in life to help us grow spiritually. It is through our troubles that we learn to call on God and to depend on the power available to us through the Holy Spirit sent by God to live in us. It is through the growing process that we are drawn closer to God and filled with the fullness of God.

When we have the fullness of God we have everything we need. We have all we need for our salvation and all we need to live right. God's fullness enriches our life and brings grace and peace to us in abundance. Jesus came to give us life and have life abundantly.

Here is the big question for us today: How many of us experience even a small part of the abundant life Jesus promised to those who are faithful to Him? We must ask ourselves if we are missing out on God's best in our lives.

God desires to give us a marvelous beginning with our salvation and a great ending in Glory. But what our life (our city) is like in between is our choice. Is your Christian life today all that God expects of you?

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Proverbs 19:17.

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.

PRAYER:

Thank You Lord for the salvation You have given me and the sure hope of spending an eternity with You. I commit myself this day to making the most of my spiritual journey as long as You leave me on this earth. Help me to grow in my knowledge of You so that I can experience as much as I can from You and be prepared to share Your love with those I meet today.

Meditation: October 7, 2013

TODAY’S WORD FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 7, 2013.

MEDITATION

DEFINITION:

Continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation; to think deeply; devout religious contemplation or spiritual introspection.

SCRIPTURE:

When He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. Matthew 14:23.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:2.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Most people in the midst of constant busyness feel that they need to escape from where they are to a quiet place just for a few minutes. Most of us have more on our "to do list" than we can possibly get done in a day, and it usually is the same day after day after day. We get to the point where we say, "I need a break." We need to take a break so we can decompress and recoup. This is what the Psalmist is saying (above) to us. He sees the Good Shepherd bringing him to "still waters" --- waters to rest by. It gives us a picture of a quiet place, a retreat from the pressures of life and where you can rest in the presence of your Good Shepherd.

Even Jesus looked for a place (above verse from Matthew) to go and rest and pray. All believers need to take the time each day just to rest and meditate on what God wants to tell you.

There are 150 Psalms of which David composed 73. All of the Psalmists were men who loved God and loved His Word and meditated on it. The Psalmist who wrote Psalms 1:2 said that those who love God will want to meditate on it day and night. The Psalmists reveal to us what they meditate on:

              God’s unfailing love. Psalm 48:9
God’s works and mighty deeds. Psalm 77:12
              God’s precepts and God’s ways. Psalm 119:15.
The splendor of God’s majesty. Psalm 145:5.

The psalmists understood the importance of meditation to their spiritual lives. It was so important to the writer of Psalm 119:148 that he stayed awake to meditate through the night. More importantly they loved God so much that they had a compelling desire and hunger for God’s Word.

The result of the meditation of the Psalmists is the outpouring of praise and thanksgiving that they have shared with us from their hearts in the book of Psalms.

The apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 5:16 to "redeem the time." What he is saying is that we need to use our time right and make the most of the time we have. We need to take the time to meditate and read God's Word. We need to take the time to pray to our heavenly Father. We need to take the time just to rest and meditate and let God talk to us. You will find that time spent in meditation with the Lord will bless your heart, and like the psalmists you will want to praise God and offer your prayers of thanksgiving to Him for all He has done for you.

As your day winds to a close, if you have not taken time to meditate on God's Word and allowed God to talk to you, then take time before you go to bed for quiet reflection. In the serenity of the evening, we can enter God's presence and not only get a more accurate perspective on life but refresh and restore our weary souls.

When we take time to meditate and draw near to God our minds are refreshed and our strength is renewed.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Proverbs 19:17.

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.

PRAYER:

Give me the time each day to stop and rest and meditate on what You have to say to me. Open my eyes to the wisdom of Your Word and make my heart receptive to Your leading.  May my family learn to rest in You and then together may we reach out to tell the world around us the good news of the gospel.
