Gems of Encouragement: March 22, 2014

GEMS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SATURDAY MARCH 22, 2014.

PROVERB:

A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. Proverbs 11:13.

PROMISE:

But I tell you that men will have to give account on that Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. Matthew 12:36-37.

PRAISE:

O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues.  With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord; in the great throng I will praise Him. For He stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save his life from those who condemn him. Psalm 109: 1-2; 30-31.

Reward: March 21, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR FRIDAY MARCH 21, 2014.

REWARD

DEFINITION:

A prize for merit, accomplishment or good conduct, to compensate for good.

SCRIPTURE:

Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Matthew 6:4.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

It seems that here in America that everything we do somehow involves us getting rewards in return. You go to some stores and they either give you cash back or points that you can combine with points you already have to get something free.

When you fly on airlines today they ask if you are going to use points. This is because every time you fly with that airline or use their credit card you get points. All of these “gimmicks” are put in place to encourage business. These are all better known as reward programs.

God has a rewards program far better than offered to us here on earth, but most believers seem to show very little interest in His program. Jesus often spoke of His Father’s promise to reward us for loyally serving Him. For example, when we are persecuted for His sake, in other words for taking our stand for our Lord, Jesus tells us to rejoice for great is our reward in heaven (Matthew 5:12).

God wants us to give, pray and fast, not as the Pharisees’ did --- in public for all to see. He wants us to do these things in private, because “Your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly in heaven (Matthew 6:4, 6, 18). We are to do what we do from the heart unto the Lord and not for the praise of men.

We do not serve Jesus for the rewards that we may get for serving Him. When He died on the cross, He did far more for us than we deserve. Loyalty to Him and our service to Him are to be done as an act of worship that expresses our loving gratitude for His love toward us. In return, He delights to encourage us with the assurance that ultimately His rewards will outweigh whatever we have given up for Him.

We should want to commit to live for Jesus every moment of every day regardless of the cost just because we love Him. Have you thanked Him lately for the blessed hope of eternal life that has been promised to all those who love Him and acknowledge Him as their Savior and their Lord?

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 14:5-6.

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

PRAYER

Help me to work for You today not concerned about the good words or rewards that may come my way from the world we live in. Give me the tasks that You want me to accomplish that will grow Your kingdom and glorify Your name.

Flawed: March 20, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR THURSDAY MARCH 20, 2014.

FLAWED

DEFINITION:

Defective, imperfect, weak.

SCRIPTURE:

My strength is made perfect in weakness. II Corinthians 12:9

For without Me you can do nothing. John 15:5

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

In an interview of an actor, he said that he enjoyed playing “flawed” characters in movies because people relate to an imperfect character. This is true. People like to hear about flawed people. When you look at what makes the biggest headlines in the news it is stories about famous people, such as politicians, sports figures, or stars in the entertainment world who commit a scandalous act of wrong doing.

The media knows that the public loves to hear about other people’s failures and flaws, especially those who are looked up to. The reason we like to hear about other people’s transgressions is that it makes us feel better about ourselves. We all know that we are flawed but we do not want others to know how flawed we are.

Most of us would agree that it is easier for us to understand people who are not perfect because we know that we are not perfect. Therefore they are a lot like us.

There are so many accounts in the Bible of people who were flawed and had weaknesses and yet God used them in powerful and mighty ways. Most of them faced times of decision or times of crisis that revealed their weaknesses. Jacob resorted to deceiving his father so that he would receive his father’s blessing. Gideon was so unsure of God that he asked him twice for proof that He would be faithful to do what He said He would do. Peter was so fearful for his own safety that he denied knowing his friend and Lord.

When you read the rest of the stories of these men, you will observe that these people were able, with God’s help, to overcome their shortcomings and ultimately were useful to God. They were all flawed but when they put their trust in God, He made them useful. It was by first seeing that they were weak that they could see that they had to depend on God and not on themselves.

Just as the people who lived thousands of years ago, each one of us has flaws. By the grace of God we can overcome our flaws and imperfections by embracing “His strength which is made perfect in weakness.” II Corinthians 12:9. When we forget to depend on the Lord, the Lord may make us weaker with the intention of making us realize we will do better when we rely solely on Him. When we feel we are strong in abilities or resources we try to do God’s work on our own. It is in our weakness that we turn to God and God’s power is able to shine forth.

God’s strength and power is available to all who love Him and no one is so flawed that God cannot use them. Nor is anyone so unflawed that they do not need God’s strength and power. No matter how great our abilities or how hard we work, Jesus tells us in John 15:5, “Without Me you can do nothing.”

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 14:5-6.

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

PRAYER:

It is my prayer today that Your strength will be made perfect in my weakness. It is my desire, Lord, that through my weakness You can be glorified by the working of Your power. Help me to recognize my weaknesses and give me Your grace to acknowledge that of myself I can do nothing.

Wings: March 19, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR WEDNESDAY MARCH 19, 2014.

WINGS

DEFINITION:

A limb usually occurring in pairs; a flight.

SCRIPTURE:

Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. Psalm 55:6.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

David wrote openly and honestly about the ups and downs in his life. Although he was King, life was not easy. He had violence, oppression and strife around him on all sides. Much of this was stirred up by disloyalties from old friends and even family. On many occasions fear and terror, pain and trembling, anxiety and restlessness overwhelmed him. No wonder he wrote in the verse above that he wanted wings so he could fly away.

When many of us face strife, pain or anxiety we want to go somewhere to get away from it all. So we can understand how David felt when he wrote this verse (above). You can hear him sigh and say, OH, if I only had wings like a dove, I would get out of here and fly away and be at rest for a few days.

But escape for David was not an option. He could not evade his concerns. He could only give his circumstances to God. In verses 16-17 he writes, “As for me, I will call upon God, and the Lord shall save me. Evening and morning and noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice.”

David was confident that when he called upon the Lord, the Lord would hear him and would protect him. There is no escaping from the difficult situations we face in life. But whatever our circumstances, a difficult marriage, a problem child, a loss of a job, the loss of a loved one, neighbors that are hurtful, or deep loneliness, we can give them to God.

God has lifted the burden of our sins so will He not lift the weight of our sorrows? We have trusted Him with our eternal souls, can we not trust Him with our current circumstances. In Psalms 55:22 it reads, “Cast your burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain you.” Because God cares for us, we can leave our cares with Him.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 14:5-6.

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

PRAYER:

I am so grateful that I can put in Your hands all my cares and concerns. Help me to teach my family and friends to daily cast their cares and concerns upon You, knowing that You will in turn care for them.

Slacker: March 18, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR TUESDAY MARCH 18, 2014.

SLACKER

DEFINITION:

Idler; shirker; loafer; sluggard; couch potato; one who is negligent of his duty; goof off.

SCRIPTURE:

How long will you slumber, O sluggard? Proverbs 6:9

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPEREIENCE:

We noticed when reading through some Bible study notes on Proverbs that the writer suggested changing the word “sluggard” in Proverbs (above) to “slacker.” This made more sense to us because we have seen many people in our lifetime that were basically what we would call slackers.

Slackers by definition are negligent of their duties. In our society they are often called “goof offs” or “couch potatoes.” Slackers choose to be lazy and would rather sleep than work. We all know a few slackers.

Parents that fail to teach and discipline their children are slackers. They are neglecting the responsibility that God has commanded them to do. What about the husband or even sometimes the wife that just refuses to help around the house? They would have to be considered slackers.

What about the teenagers that neglect their studies and play internet games and send text messages day and night? Yes, they too are slackers. The list can go on and on but the bottom line is that too many people today are slackers or as the scripture tells us in Proverbs, sluggards.

We have stated the problem above as we see it but what is the solution? Many of the types of people we have referred to above are lazy because they have no purpose in life. Thus it becomes a spiritual problem. They need something or someone to give them a purpose in life and a desire to be happy and functional responsible parents, loving spouses, and obedient children.

If we are honest we are all susceptible to being slack in what we do. Are you a “prayer slacker or a Bible reading slacker?” Possibly you are a “non-exercising-of –our-spiritual-gift slacker or a non-witnessing slacker?” If we are not doing what we know that God wants us to do then we are certainly spiritual slackers. In fact, when we refuse to obey God, we are more than slackers, we are sinning.

In the book of James 4:17 we are given some challenging and convicting words. “It is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”

Take a few moments today just to make sure you are not a spiritual slacker. If you feel you are then take actions now to change your direction in life. It is a matter of will and determination. It begins with reading the Bible daily and then communicating with God through prayer. We may make excuses for not obeying God by reading His Word and praying but God still calls it disobedience.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 14:5-6.

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

PRAYER:

Give me the determination today to not be a slacker. Help me to know what You want me to do and then to obey Your call. Keep me from ignoring Your voice and choosing sinful ways that do not honor Your name.

Peace: March 17, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR MONDAY MARCH 17, 2014.

PEACE

DEFINITION:

Freedom from strife, discord, war or civil disorder; harmony in human relationships; quiet; calm; tranquility.

SCRIPTURE:

Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

All of the restlessness of our times might be understood as an attempt by believers in Jesus to acquire the right things in the wrong way. We believe that there are essentially three things that believers want. They want righteousness, peace and joy. But because our understanding is warped by sin, our search for these things gets skewed. Today we will discuss one of these three, PEACE.

John F. Kennedy, former President of the United States said, “The absence of war is not the same thing as peace.” Even when our society has enjoyed so called peace, there is often a sense of national tension, unease, and dissatisfaction. As a people, most of the time, we are not at peace with each other nor even with ourselves. This is because we seek peace in the wrong places and in the wrong ways.

For example, many people are dissatisfied with themselves because they feel they must have more than they have. It leads them to seek money, fame, or a higher standard of living as the key to having peace of mind, yet the more they get the more they want. Some think they will have peace if they do good works and strive to be a better person.

Nothing in this world and no amount of effort on our part can bring the kind of peace we long for. True and lasting peace comes from God. Peace is God’s gift to us when we accept His free gift of salvation. Romans 5:1 says “Therefore since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

God gives us as believers, even in uncertain times, a very different and transcendent peace; the peace that passes all understanding. This is what the apostle Paul wrote to us in the book of Philippians (above verse). When your heart is troubled and you are not feeling at peace, focus on God’s promises and His great love for you.

It is not what is out there in the world that gives us peace. It is what is from out of this world, but is within us. It is Jesus Christ dwelling within us that brings peace. In Colossians 1:27 Paul describes that the peace that Jesus dwelling in us gives is the hope of glory; that we will spend eternity with Christ.

The song writer Edward Bickersteth wrote it beautifully in, “Peace, perfect peace.” He wrote two lines in every verse. The first line ends with a question mark and the second line answers the question. Read carefully his words:

•    Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin? The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.
•
•    Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed? To do the will of Jesus, this is rest.
•
•    Peace, perfect peace, with sorrows searching round? On Jesus’ bosom naught but calm is found.
•
•    Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown? Jesus we know and He is on the throne.
•
•    Peace, perfect peace, death shadowing us and ours? Jesus has vanquished death and all its powers
•
Only the peace that Jesus gives will last for eternity. Put your focus on Him because He has the answers for all your needs. He will bring true peace into your life.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 14:5-6.

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through Me.”

PRAYER:

Thank You Lord for the words of Paul written to the church at Philippi that applies to me: Do not be anxious for anything and then the peace of God will guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus.
