Gems of Encouragement: July 26, 2014

GEMS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SATURDAY JULY 26, 2014.

PROVERB:

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
Proverbs 12:18-19.

PROMISE:

You destroy those who tell lies; blood thirsty and deceitful men the Lord abhors.
Psalm 5:6

PRAISE:

I do not sit with deceitful men, nor do I consort with hypocrites; I abhor the assembly of evil doers and refuse to sit with the wicked. I wash my hands in innocence, and go about Your altar, O Lord, proclaiming aloud Your praise and telling of all Your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 26:4-7.

Helpness: July 25, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR FRIDAY JULY 25, 2014.

HELPLESS

DEFINITION:

Unable to help oneself; weak or dependent; without aid or protection; powerless; incapacitated.

SCRIPTURE:

Some came and reported to Jehoshaphat that a great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea --- Jehoshaphat was afraid and turned his attention to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. II Chronicles 20:2-3

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Have you ever felt totally helpless? Can you remember facing a situation or emergency in which you were completely powerless? To say the least, it is a sobering experience for anyone to go through.

Jehoshaphat faced a moment like that. The good king was confronted with dangerous news. Three different armies had joined their forces together with the goal of defeating Israel.

He was told that “a great multitude” of attackers were already on their way. What was the King’s response? Verse three tells us that he was afraid. That makes perfect sense. He no doubt felt utterly powerless.  The scripture does not tell us that he was afraid and ran away. It does not tell us that he was afraid but still charged headlong into battle.

What the scripture says is that he was afraid and turned his attention to seek the Lord. That was a perfect response to a helpless situation. The king knew this was not the time to give up or the time to take action motivated by fear. Instead, he held a prayer meeting and asked others to pray. Jehoshaphat confessed to God that he and his people were powerless (II Chronicles 20:12). The whole situation then changed because God had been brought into a hopeless situation and now God was in charge.

God’s answer in II Chronicles 20:15 was, “Listen all Judah and King Jehoshaphat: thus says the Lord to you, ‘do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s’”

What an encouragement this was for Jehoshaphat. When we feel helpless and everyone seems to be against us we need to do as Jehoshaphat did. Pray and give the battle to God. Because Jehoshaphat trusted the Lord he did not even have to fight in the battle. God told him, “You need not fight in this battle; station yourselves, stand and see the salvation of the Lord.” God will always be there with you to give us the victory when we are willing to trust Him and give our battles to Him.

We all need encouragement when we feel helpless. At such times it is extremely valuable to recall how the Lord worked out situations for us and others in the past. Our faith is strengthened when we take His track record into account and remember God’s promise to be with us.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Romans 8:28.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

PRAYER:

Help me to remember what You have done for others in their time of helplessness so that You can weave the threads of faith and love that You have for me into my life so that in my helpless times I will have victory so that you may receive the glory.

Kindness: July 24, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR THURSDAY JULY 24, 2014.

KINDNESS

DEFINITION:

Compassion; tenderness; considerate; gentleness; unselfish.

SCRIPTURE:

Thus says the Lord, let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things, declares the Lord. Jeremiah 9:23-24.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Years ago author Ray Stedman said that joy is love enjoying itself; peace is love resting; patience is love waiting; goodness is love choosing; faithfulness is love keeping its word; gentleness is love empathizing; self-control is love resisting temptation; and kindness is love reacting.

Kindness stems from love and love comes from God. We asked ourselves the questions, “What does love that comes from God look like? “How does love react?”

First of all it is revealed in us having generous thoughts that look for the good in people. Secondly, kindness is shown with sensitive words that are spoken to the unruly for discipline and the well behaved for praise.

Kindness is reacting to love when we give considerate responses to words that are spoken in the face of anger or injustice. Kindness also is when we make intentional efforts that will benefit others without personal gain to us.

Kindness is not something we put on for certain occasions to make ourselves look good. Kindness is an attribute of God that He desires to reproduce in us. The Lord delights in showing us loving kindness and it is pleasing to Him when we show loving kindness to others.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Romans 8:28.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

PRAYER:

I confess to You the times that I have not shown kindness to someone who needed a touch from You through me. May Your Holy Spirit develop the fruit of kindness in me so that I may respond to Your desire for kindness to be evident in all that I do.

Burden: July 23, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR WEDNESDAY JULY 23, 2014.

BURDEN

DEFINITION:

A load; that which is carried; that which is borne with difficulty, spiritually or physically.

SCRIPTURE:

Carry each other’s burdens and in this way you will fill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2.

We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. I Thessalonians 5:14.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

There are many things in life that are called burdens. In the Old Testament a heavy load is called a burden in Exodus 23:5.  People are called a burden in Numbers 11:11-17.

In the New Testament hard labor is referred to as a burden in Matthew 20:12. In Acts 15:28 we are told that a burden is a difficult requirement. Burdens make life difficult and are hard to bear. Burdens can hinder the faith and spiritual growth of a believer.

In Romans 15:1-2 we are told to help those who are weak and struggling. Doing this effectively requires three things of us. First, we must be aware and sensitive to the struggles of those around us. Secondly, we are not to bear the burden of someone around us based on how we feel about that person. We need to have a spirit of acceptance and help them, no matter who they are. Jesus did not discriminate and neither should we. Thirdly, we need to be available. Many Christians relegate the work of caring to someone else like their pastor or friend. You must be available to share in the carrying of the load.

Recently listening to a message of Dr. Charles Stanley he gave some practical suggestions for us to consider. Let us share with you in part some of what he said. Here are six practical ways, several from Dr. Stanley, that can help you bear someone’s burdens.

First, you must be there. Sometimes the best way to help is just to be with the hurting person. In a person’s darkest hour for the most part a hurting person does not need someone to fix something. They just need a friend.

Secondly, you must listen. Do not attempt to give answers to unasked questions or tell one what to do next. Injured souls frequently only want a listening ear so they can express what is on their mind.

Thirdly, learn to share. Never set yourself in the position of one that has all the answers, because you do not. But do allow your own pain and failures to help others.

Fourthly, pray with the one you are there to help. There is power in speaking people’s names before the Lord. When someone hears someone talk to Jesus on their behalf, healing often starts to take place.

Fifthly, be willing to give. Sometimes helping others involves more than a hand shake or a warm hug. Maybe there is a need for financial or material help. Be willing to give to a person who you know to be sincere and genuinely hurting.

Finally, be willing to be a substitute. You may know an individual who bears the burden for caring for someone else and is overwhelmed. Be willing to step in and be a substitute for a while. Jesus was a substitute and we should be willing to be one also.

Jesus bore all of our sins, even unto death. As a result we now can live happier and eternally in communion with our Father. If Christ did that for us, how can we ever say that I am too busy to bear someone else’s burden?

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Romans 8:28.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

PRAYER:
Help me to care for others enough that I might be willing to carry their burdens when I have an opportunity. Thank You for carrying the burden for my sin all the way to the cross. Thank You that I can bring all my burdens and cares to You.

Mind: July 22, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR TUESDAY JULY 22, 2014.

MIND

DEFINITION:

The part of a human that reasons, thinks, feels, wills, perceives and judges.  Intellect or understanding.

SCRIPTURE:

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. Mark 12:30.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

God invites us to use our minds. In Isaiah 1:18 it is written, “Come now, and let us reason together, says the Lord.” Christ touches every area of our lives. When He touches our minds we are transformed by the renewing of our minds.

We are told in the scripture not to be like a senseless horse or a mule, “which have no understanding” (Psalm 32:9). Mules and horses must be led by bits and bridles. They have no understanding. God has given us a mind with which to reason and to gain understanding. It is with our mind that we understand who God is. God wants us to love Him not just with our minds but with all that we are.

When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment He replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37

Love is an emotion and comes from the heart. Christianity is falling in love with Christ. Have you ever fallen in love without emotion?

It is with the heart that we believe on our Lord Jesus Christ, not our mind. Many have head knowledge of Jesus and they say they know Him but without one’s heart accepting Jesus it is meaningless.

We are to love the Lord with all our heart, our mind, our soul, our mind and our strength which means we are to love the Lord with our entire being. There are three principal things that make up our being and flow from our heart. The power of feeling and desire is our Soul. Energy and power is our strength. Understanding and wisdom is our mind.

Our love for the Lord proceeds from our heart and manifests without through our soul, might and mind.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Romans 8:28.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

PRAYER:

May my love for You embrace my whole being. Teach me, O Lord, true love.

Caring: July 21, 2014

TODAYS WORD FOR MONDAY JULY 21, 2014.

CARING

DEFINITION:

To be concerned; to desire to make provision; to watch over.

SCRIPTURE:

If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. I Timothy 5:8.

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. James 1:27.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
These scriptures remind us that we have a responsibility to care, both physically and spiritually for our fellow people. Timothy reminds us of our responsibility to care for those in our family. Also James reminds us that we are instructed to CARE for the orphans, the widows, the hungry, the poor and needy.

After Saul and his sons were killed in a battle with the Philistines, David became King. David asked, "Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake." II Samuel 9:2. David was told that there was only Mephibosheth. He was the son of Jonathan and crippled in both his feet. David immediately sent for him.

Mephibosheth came before David in great fear because he knew that his grandfather, Saul, was jealous of David and had sought to kill him. After reassuring Mephibosheth to not be afraid, David said, "I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father, Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather, Saul, and you will always eat at my table." (II Samuel 9:7) All the rest of his life Mephibosheth sat at David's table like one of his sons. David showed he cared by his action of kindness. When we truly care we will act upon it.

God instructed the children of Israel under Moses, when they were wandering in the desert, that they were to take care of their families, and not only their families but also the widows, the fatherless and their neighbors. Caring for others does not come readily for most people. God continually cares about each one of us and has instructed all of us to care for others.

Paul gets straight to the point in I Timothy 5:8, saying to us that if we do not provide for our own family and relatives we deny our faith and we are worse than unbelievers. Faith that is not accompanied by action is dead.

It has always been those who love God who have done the most to care for those who are lonely, hungry and needy. When a disaster hits some part of the world it is always the Christian groups that are there first to help. The closer you are to God, the more you will have a heart for others and caring for others will become more natural to you.

As those who love the Lord, loving and caring for others should be our major life's work and caring for those of our "own house" is our highest priority.

All of our lives we have had the privilege to work with missions where we have been able to help care for the poor and needy. It began over 50 years ago when we were in Korea with the assignment to set up over 140 orphanages for World Vision to take care of the abandoned "GI" babies after the Korean War. In later years we helped care for the children living in the slums and in refugee camps in Africa.

Our hearts were broken when we saw children in Honduras dying with cancer with no medical equipment or medicine. We could not help but to get them equipment and medicine to show that we cared for them. These few examples that moved our hearts hopefully will be enough to challenge you to care for someone you meet today that has a need and is waiting for you to care for them.

We have experienced that there is great joy in caring for others and being able to do something to make their lives better. The blessing is always ours when we help someone else. You do not have to go to Africa, Korea or Honduras. There are people living on your street and in your town that are hurting and waiting for someone like you to help.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Romans 8:28.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

PRAYER:

Help me to be a caring person that You can use. Keep me alert to the concerns of my family first and then to my neighbors and friends. Give me the strength and discernment to be that caring person that honors You to those that need care today.
