Word: May 14, 2010

May 14. TODAYS WORD FOR FRIDAY MAY 14, 2010.

WORD

DEFINITION:

A sound or combination of sounds; a graphic presentation expressing an idea; speech; a song lyric; The WORD OF GOD; the revelation of God.

SCRIPTURE:

So then faith comes from hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Word is a term used to mean the sounds from our month. It is also used as a term for the Bible and as a term for Jesus. The Bible is appropriately called the Word of God because it is God’s written Word to us. In II Timothy 3:16 we are told that “All scripture is God-breathed.” This means that it was written by believers as God revealed His person and plan to them. The Bible is not a collection of stories or myths of human ideas about God.

God gave us the Bible to teach us, correct us, and rebuke us and to train us in righteousness. Because the Bible is the inspired Word of God we can be sure it is true. Proverbs 30:5 says God’s Word is pure and flawless. John 17:17 says His Word is truth.

Jesus is also called the “WORD.” In Revelation 17:13, John writes in reference to Jesus that “His name is the Word of God.” John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was with God in the beginning. In verse 14 John again refers to Jesus as the Word. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

Then there are the “WORDS” from our mouths. Sometimes these words are considered bad and sometimes they are good. Many times our children would comment to us on words they overheard from their peers or someone passing by. We trained our children at an early age the importance of using at all times the right words. Words speak volumes about the person that says them.

We have heard people whose words continually, one after the other, are words that take the name of our Lord in vain. These are words that we trained our children not to use. In James 3:2-8 we are reminded that the tongue is a wicked weapon. And from experience over the years we would agree with this statement from the Bible. However, the tongue can serve a useful purpose when we use it to form words of praise to our Lord and Savior and to our Father in heaven.

Paul’s advice to us in Ephesians 4:29 is to let no corrupt word proceed out of our mouth but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. As Christians we should choose our words wisely and use them to build others up.

• In Acts 13:15 Paul was asked by the leaders in the synagogue to bring a word of encouragement to them.

• Proverbs 25:11 tells us that a word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. This is a reminder to us that words of wisdom are to be valued.

• The Word of God is pure (Proverbs 30:5)

Let us repeat: In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and the WORD was God. As believers let us watch our words and make sure that every word we use honors and glorifies our Lord.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 16:24.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name, Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

PRAYER:

Help me to choose the right words in all that I say. May the words that come from my mouth always exalt Your name. May my words be a standard for my children, my spouse, my family and my friends so they can see and hear how they should choose their words.

Blood: May 13, 2010

MAY 13. TODAYS WORD FOR THURSDAY MAY 13, 2010.

BLOOD

DEFINITION:

The red fluid that flows through the heart; the vital principle of life.

SCRIPTURE:

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. Ephesians 1:7.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Without blood there is no life. Without blood there is no salvation. Salvation brings eternal life. That is how vital blood is to every person on this earth. Also without blood the Bible is simply a history book. It is because of the blood of Jesus that we have been forgiven of our sins and have the glorious hope of spending an eternity with Jesus.

Today we want to look with you at several references to the blood of Jesus in the Bible. First it brings to us redemption. In I Peter 1:18-19 it reads that knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver or gold from the empty way of life handed down to you by your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ , as a lamb without blemish and without spot. This verse makes it very clear that we do not have redemption by buying it with silver or gold but through the blood of Jesus.

We are all slaves to sin in this world and Jesus went to the cross to purchase us from slavery. He was our substitute and redeemed us from our sins.

The blood of Jesus brings forgiveness. In the verse we have written above from Ephesians explains the basis for our forgiveness. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross made the payment for our sins. God forgave us through the blood of Jesus.

In Romans 5:8 -10 we read that the blood of Jesus justified us. In other words when we accepted Jesus and because He paid the penalty for our sins we are justified--- just as if I had not sinned. Through Jesus God accepts full payment for our sins.

In Colossians 1:21-22 we are told that the blood of Jesus God has reconciled us to God. We were once alienated from God by our sins. By the blood of Christ our bodies are made holy, acceptable, blameless and above reproach to God.

And in Hebrews 13:12 we are told that because of the blood of Jesus we are sanctified. This means that we are in the position of being set apart to be useful to God. Yes, the blood of Jesus redeems us, justifies us, reconciles us, and sanctifies us. Jesus shed blood on the cross covers our sins once and for all. Because of the blood of Jesus we not only have salvation but we have access to the throne of God.

What we have through the blood of Jesus we cannot buy nor do we deserve it. It was God’s gift to us because of the riches of His grace.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse this week is found in John 16:24.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name, Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

PRAYER:

Thank You Jesus for Your shed blood that paid the penalty for my sins. Help me to communicate to my family and my friends the awesome work of the blood of Jesus and how it has changed my life for now and for eternity.

Loyalty: May 12, 2010

May 12. TODAYS WORD FOR WEDNESDAY MAY 12, 2010

LOYALTY

DEFINITION:

Faithful to one’s sovereign reign, oath or obligation; loyal to a vow; faithfulness.

SCRIPTURE:

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Proverbs 17:17.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

The western novelist Steven Bly writes that there were two types of friends in the days of America’s old west. There were runners and standers. These terms were also given to horses. At the first sign of trouble the runner would bolt, abandoning you to whatever peril you were facing. But a stander would stick with you no matter what the circumstances might be. Unfortunately, he wrote, you would not know what kind of friend you had until trouble came. And then it was too late, unless your friend was a stander.

Rather than spending time thinking about what kind of friends you have, we ought to consider what kind of friend we are. The apostle Paul in his final days as he awaited death noted that some who had ministered with him turned into runners and abandoned him allowing him to face execution alone. In II Timothy 4:11 he referred to Demas who had run off and then simply stated that only Luke had stayed with him. Paul was no doubt disappointed with those who had deserted him but deeply comforted that Luke stood with him. Luke was a stander!

Proverbs tells us that a friend loves at all times. During times of adversity we all need friends that we can rely on. When people we know that are in trouble, what kind of friend will we be to them? Are you a runner or a stander?

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John16:24.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, help me be the kind of friend who does not run when one of my friends is in need. Give me the courage to stand by my friend and give me the wisdom to know what to say and also the ability to serve them.

Creation: May 11, 2010

May 11. TODAYS WORD FOR TUESDAY MAY 11, 2010.

CREATION

DEFINITION:

To cause to come into being.

SCRIPTURE:

The Lord formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

God, the sovereign creator formed and shaped humanity by unique design. The process involved fashioning a man from the dust of the ground. The word “FORMED” used in genesis 2:7 (above) describes the work of an artist. Like a potter molding and fashioning mud into a pot or some other earthen vessel, so did God form humanity from clay.

God’s work with dust and mud continued by His breathing into man the breath of life, changing his form into a living soul. This made man a spiritual being with the capacity to serve and fellowship with the Lord.

After Adam and Eve sinned, God continued working, sending His only Son, Jesus to die for humanity and then regenerating those who receive Jesus so we can enjoy fellowship with Him.

In Psalm 139 David describes God as fashioning his tiny body together in the darkness of his mother’s womb. God loved David before he ever existed and this is so with us. God designed David just as he designed you and I and brought us into being according to His predetermined plan. David was shaped, just as you and I were, by our Heavenly Father’s love into a unique creation. We came into this world from the inventive heart and hand of God.

David rejoiced in his creation by saying in Psalm 139:14, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” All life is created by God and someone added to this and said, “And we all bear His autograph.”

God also created an orderly universe for us to enjoy. On a clear night we can all go out and see the orderliness of His creation. The stars, the moon, Jupiter and Venus and all are placed as God wanted them. The earth is just the right distance from the sun. If it was any closer it would be too hot for us to survive. And if it was any farther it would be too cold for us to exist. The universe is so orderly in its design by God that we can predict eclipses, the return of Haley’s comet and so many other wonders of the universe. In Jeremiah 33:25-26 it is written that the ordinances of heaven and earth have the same certainty as His promises to His covenant people. Truly the wonders of God’s creation reveal that there is a God who is at work every day of our lives. Yes, we do serve an awesome God.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 16:24.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full.

PRAYER:

We stand back and marvel at the perfection of Your creations. You are such a great and awesome God who does not change. As I place my life in Your hands, I will trust You to be faithful.

Bible: May 10, 2010

May 10. TODAYS WORD FOR MONDAY MAY 10, 2010

BIBLE

DEFINITION:

The collection of sacred writings of the Christian religion. The inspired Word of God.

SCRIPTURE:

“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” John 1:1.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

The Bible is known as the Word of God. For believers the Bible is the way that God communicates with us. If we as believers are known as children of God, we must have communication between our father and ourselves. Our communication to God is through prayer. His communication to us is through His Word.

Hebrews 4:12 reads, “For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit.” The Psalmist said in 119:93, “Your precepts have given me life.” God’s Word shows us our sins and their consequences and it also tells us of God’s love and salvation. God’s Word also gives us wisdom for daily living. In Psalm 119:105 we are told that His Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Many books we read inform us but only one book --- the Bible – transforms.

The Bible is God’s plan to show us the best way to live. God builds suspense all through the Old Testament and then at the appointed time God sends his Son to this world to pay the penalty for our sins. His disciple Simeon said, “My eyes have seen Your salvation, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles and glory to the people of Israel.”

We want to suggest a plan for you to know and understand what God has for you. If you are willing to invest 15 minutes a day in searching for treasure in the Bible, it will be as Solomon said in Proverbs 2, “If you seek (wisdom) as silver, and search for her as you would search for hidden treasure you will soon understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of the Lord.”

Growth will not happen at once but gradually day by day your life will begin changing. It begins with a willing commitment on your part and will lead to the treasures of wisdom and life that you so desperately need in a sinful and evil world.

LEARNING: Our memory verse for this week is found in John 16:24.

“Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

PRAYER:

Thank You for giving us the Bible so that we can listen to You each day. May I learn to grow in You as I read Your Word. Give me direction, wisdom and knowledge as I search Your Word for the treasures I need in my life.
