Forgiveness: June 10, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR FRIDAY JUNE 10, 2016.
FORGIVENESS

DEFINITION:

The act of granting pardon for an offense; to cancel or remit a debt or an obligation.
SCRIPTURE:

He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth so great is His love for those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:10.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

For those who love God and have come to Him for forgiveness of sins, God forgives so completely that He separates us from it. The Psalmist says that God has removed our sins as far from us as the “east is from the west.” God’s forgiveness means not only that He takes our sins away but that He also forgets them. He will never punish us for them, even though we deserve it. In fact He will never dredge them up again.

How different God’s forgiveness is from our forgiveness. We will say that we forgive others, but we just do not forget what they have done. We seem to love to bring up what was done in the past, especially when it serves our purpose. This usually happens the first time we have a new disagreement with the offending person.

All those who have accepted God’s forgiveness for the sins that they have committed through the shed blood of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, should be changed people. Christians must put their faith into action so that they are more like Christ. A Christian’s conduct should validate Jesus’ transforming power in his or her life.

The apostle Paul understood the challenges Christian’s face in living a life that is Christ-like. He speaks to this challenge of forgiveness in Colossians 3:13. He tells us, “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Paul knew that God’s forgiveness is perfect and complete because he experienced it. There is no better example than God’s loving forgiveness that He has given us. If we consider how much He has forgiven us how can we not forgive the little wrongs others do to us.

We want others to forgive us when we ask but we find it difficult, more often than not, to forgive others. When we find we just do not want to forgive someone, we best heed Jesus’ warning about forgiveness in Matthew 6:14-15. Jesus said: “If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins”.

When we are unwilling to forgive others, it means we are putting ourselves in God’s place to decide who should be forgiven and who should not. It reveals that we do not understand the real meaning of forgiveness.

It is one thing to forgive our friends, but forgiving our enemies takes super human strength that only God can give. The story is told that during the Revolutionary war a pastor named John Miller learned that one of his greatest enemies was going to be hanged for his many crimes. Upon hearing this, the pastor walked about 60 miles to ask General George Washington to intercede for this man’s life. The General responded and said that he was sorry but he could not pardon his “friend.” The pastor responded by saying that the man was not his friend, but his worst enemy. Seeing the preacher’s forgiveness attitude toward his staunchest enemy, General Washington signed the pardon.

Then the pastor took the signed pardon and walked another 15 miles to the execution site of his enemy. He arrived just as the condemned man was trudging toward the scaffold to be executed. The pardon arrived just in time to save his life. What forgiveness! Yet Christ did much more for us. The scriptures tell us in Romans 5:8 that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Forgiveness must start in our home. Unwillingness to forgive members of one’s family will almost always fracture families beyond repair. We must learn to forgive and to ask for forgiveness. Not only must we be willing to forgive we must be willing to forget.

Learning to forgive begins by first asking God’s forgiveness for our sins. We must teach our children about God’s forgiveness and lovingly encourage them to be forgiving. Being forgiving as a parent is the best example we can give our children just as God’s forgiving us is our example.

Think of the times when standards are broken or set boundaries are not kept. When this happens sit down and talk quietly but firmly to your children about their wrong doing and disobedience. In addition to talking about the issue involved take time to talk about how it is also disobeying God, and when we disobey Him we need to ask Him to forgive us. You will need to explain what God did to forgive us from our sins and how He expects us to have a forgiving heart. You will soon realize a whole different attitude in your home. It may take several months and multiple incidents but being consistent and loving will soon allow you to break through the barriers that stand between you and your family member. There is power in forgiveness.

When we forgive someone we show what Peter talks about in I Peter 4: 8, “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins.”  When we serve God He wants us to forgive every day and show love to all, even those who mistreat us.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Matthew 25:21.

His lord said to him, well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.

Possessions: June 9, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR THURSDAY JUNE 9, 2016.
POSSESSIONS

DEFINITION:

Ownership; a thing owned; property; wealth.
SCRIPTURE:

For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them; but it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, because You favored them. Psalm 44:3.

The earth is full of Your possessions. Psalm 104:24.

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it. Psalm 24:1

But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, and he had great possessions. Mark 10:22.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

We must first realize in life that everything we have on this earth is because of God. He is the “owner” and all that we have is on loan to us. Possessions are “things” that God loans to us and He expects us to use these “things’ to honor Him.

In Psalm 44:3 (listed above), the Psalmist recognizes that the Children of Israel did not gain possession of the “Promised Land” by their own swords and arms or their own strength and might. They gained what God promised them because God favored them and intervened to give them the victory in their conquest of the “Promised Land.”

Most people we talk to do not understand this concept because they feel that their possessions are a result of their own abilities and hard work. Their possessions become a stumbling block in their relationship with the Lord. Possessions were in the way of the rich man that talked to Jesus as recorded in Mark 10:17-23. Jesus asked him to give his possessions to the poor so he could receive his treasure in heaven. He could not part with his possessions to gain the greatest possession of all.

This is a reminder to us today that all that we have in the way of this world’s possessions, we have because God has enabled us. We are to acknowledge that what we have comes from God and then be thankful to Him and give Him the glory.

In our travels we have visited many museums and places where Kings and Queens, from thousands of years ago, had “THEIR MOST VALUABLE POSSESSIONS” buried with them in their tombs. They did this so that they would be comfortable in their future lives. But today these possessions are still near or in their tombs for all to see. It is not in God’s plan for one to take their possessions to their eternity.

Many people work long hours today and spend money foolishly to acquire their goals so that they can realize the “possessions” that they have dreamed for. The result, in most cases, is that they do this at the expense of losing their spouses and family.

Our greatest possession in life today should be our personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus. Our second greatest possession should be our spouses and family. God will bless those that grasp this concept and honor Him in this way.

We remember talking often to a mother who lived in one of the poorest areas in the heart of the inner city of Los Angeles. She had two children. One was mentally disabled and the other was in good health. She loved children and took six other children off the street and raised them in her very small home. Cathy had very few earthly possessions and had to make contact with our mission to receive food and other supplies weekly to feed these children. We were able to provide her needs and because of her dedication and love for these children they grew up loving their “mother” and most important loving their Lord. Cathy had her priorities right. She invested her time and energy to raising her “children.” She had very few earthly possessions but she used what little she had to serve her Lord and Savior. She had little treasure on earth but she stored up her treasures in heaven where she will have eternal rewards.

June 8, 2016

Courage: June 8, 2016

TODAY'S WORD FOR WEDNESDAY JUNE 8, 2016.
COURAGE

DEFINITION:

The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain without fear; bravery; to act in accordance with ones belief.
SCRIPTURE:

I will go to the King, which is against the law, and if I perish, I perish. Esther 4:16

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid, for the Lord your God, He is the one that goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

In the book of Esther we read about Mordecai, a Jew in exile, who refused to bow to Haman, who was second in command to King Ahasuerus. Haman became furious and plotted to destroy not only Mordecai but all the Jews. Haman then deceived the King and persuaded him to issue an edict condemning the Jews to death. Then Mordecai told his cousin Queen Esther and asked her to intervene.

Esther recognized that God had placed her in the palace for a reason and she alone had a chance to save her people. It would require courage on her part as she would be putting her own life in danger. She knew that approaching the King without an invitation was punishable by death. She also recognized she could not do it alone. She needed God's help.

Esther then asked Mordecai to have all the Jews pray and fast for three days just as she and her maids would be doing. Then, after three days, Esther went to the King to ask him to save her people.

The King saw her and invited her in and asked what her desire was. God went before Esther and answered her prayers and her courage was rewarded as the Jewish people were saved (Esther 4:16).

Like Esther, when we have an opportunity to stand for what is right, even though we put ourselves in danger, we must have the courage to do it. What a wonderful illustration God gave us in this true story of Esther. Because she took her stand for the Lord, asked her people to pray and then proceeded to call on the King, God answered her prayers. He will do the same for us if we call on His name.

God has allowed us to travel to almost every corner of the world. This has allowed us to meet hundreds of people that have shown unbelievable courage during their lifetime. We have met many people who have shown real courage during times of real personal crises. Having courage is a triumph over fear.

During our College days at Wheaton College, we were shocked and emotionally moved, as was our whole campus, with the announcement of the five Wheaton Alumni who were killed by the Auca Indians in Ecuador. These five dedicated missionaries had gone to a part of the world where no white man, let alone missionary had ever been. They were prepared to share their faith and translate the scriptures into the Auca language. They knew it could cost them their lives.

But God had a different plan and used their deaths to open many more doors for God to be glorified not only in Ecuador but around the world. BUT WHAT COURAGE THESE FIVE YOUNG MEN SHOWED THE WORLD. One of the five, Jim Elliott wrote before he went to Ecuador:

"HE IS NO FOOL WHO GIVES WHAT HE CANNOT KEEP
TO GAIN WHAT HE CANNOT LOSE."

These people all had courage in facing the crises in their lives. Each of us has had experiences when we have had to show courage during lonely times. Do you, in your times of distress, show the courage that these dedicated people showed? They showed courage because they believed that God would supply their need. And let us tell you that in each of these cases God did provide!

June 7, 2016

Agape: June 7, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR TUESDAY JUNE 7, 2016.
AGAPE

DEFINITION:

Love; as of God for humankind or of humankind for God.
SCRIPTURE:

Whoever does not love does not know God, because GOD IS LOVE. This is how God showed His love among us; He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. I John 4:8-10.

Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. Matthew 22: 37-38.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

AGAPE is known as true and genuine love. Love is the very nature of God. The ultimate expression of Agape Love is God giving His only son to die on the cross for our sins. This kind of love comes to us by God through His Son Jesus Christ. If we have AGAPE love in our hearts it is because we know that God loves us with no strings attached and stands next to us every moment of every day. Love is a commitment of our heart, soul and mind to our Lord. This is TRUE AND GENUINE LOVE!

How many times in life do we find ourselves in a position of just needing someone to love us? This is when we need AGAPE love because we need that special touch that only the Lord can give. Remember, He gave His life for you. What greater love is there then this?

AGAPE love means that God first loved us and we are to love God first and then to love others. It is the love from Christ that compels us to act, to love someone (II Corinthians 5:14). It is a love that never fails (I Corinthians 13:8). It is a love that made Jesus say to His disciples in John 21:7, if you love me, feed my sheep. It is a love that a mother has for her new born child. It is a love that a man and woman have on their wedding day for each other and their God.

This Agape love can only be felt by one that has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. If you want to experience AGAPE love then make that decision today.

June 6, 2016

Achievement: June 6, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR MONDAY JUNE 6, 2016.
ACHIEVEMENT

DEFINITION:

Something accomplished, as through great effort; skill; perseverance or courage; the act of achieving; attainment or accomplishment.
SCRIPTURE:

For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits (only with regard to the area of influence) which God appointed us. II Corinthians 10: 12-13.

I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

When people think of achievement, they think of successfully accomplishing a goal in life. It might be achieving a certain level of education, getting a job, applying for job advancement, finding a marriage partner or owning a new home. From the world’s perspective these achievements are more important than from God’s perspective.

God’s goal for each of us is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to live for Him and to strive to achieve all that He wants us to be. He wants us to achieve things while we are on this earth to bring honor to Him. We all need to strive daily to achieve the success that God expects of us in our marital, family, work place and friend relationships.

God has placed each of us in a special place on this earth that He has chosen just for us. It is to be our area of influence where we are to achieve the purpose and plan God has for us.

There are four steps to achievement noted by William A. Ward. Each of these four steps relate to our achievement in spiritual and physical relationships. We have added some personal thoughts following each of Dr. Ward’s two word steps.

PLAN PURPOSEFULLY: You have a responsibility to plan for yourself, for your family and for your future. In all of your plans you need to have a well thought out purpose to achieve success both spiritually and intellectually.

PREPARE PRAYERFULLY: When you plan you need to pray that God will guide your thinking so that your plans will honor God. You cannot achieve success if God’s hand of blessing is not upon you and your plans. Christ must be in the center of all you do if you expect God to give you success. In Proverbs 16:3 we are reminded to “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

PROCEED POSITIVELY: You need to plan your actions so you can achieve your goals with a positive attitude and also with a program for a positive completion.

PURSUE PERSISTENTLY: You must not become discouraged if you have setbacks. If you do not succeed at first you must try again. When you want to achieve a goal that you have set, you must be persistent in all of your efforts to meet that goal and not give up if your first attempt fails.

As you look at your life you must first evaluate your achievements on what you have accomplished for your Lord. Have you set high spiritual standards to live by each day? Have you led your family so that their first priority in life is their relationship with Jesus? Do others that you meet know without a doubt that you have a relationship with the Lord? Positive responses to these questions are all vital in order for you to achieve your goals spiritually in life. If you are right with the Lord, He will bless you and enable you to achieve success in other areas of your life.

As we trained our children we put strong emphasis on their spiritual achievements but along with that emphasis we wanted each one to understand the importance of achievements in their daily activities. When they made commitments in school, in church, in sports or in any other activities they were encouraged to give 100% at all times, so that they would honor God and have the satisfaction that they had given their best.

In life today many people, children and adults, just do enough to get by. This is not acceptable to God but we see it as the norm every day. God wants us to excel in whatever we attempt so that He can receive the honor and glory.

In Ecclesiastics 4:4 it reads: “For all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor.” Achievement in life is admired by society, but the only achievement that counts with God is what we do for our Lord.

What are your spiritual goals in this life? Have you achieved each one yet or if not are you working to achieve them? Think also about what you want to achieve while God has you on this earth and then compare that to what you have accomplished thus far.
