Man: February 19, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR FRIDAY FEBRUARY 19, 2016.
MAN

DEFINITION:

A person; a human being.

SCRIPTURE:

What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him. Psalm 8:4.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Have you ever asked yourself the question: “Who am I and why am I here?” Throughout the ages philosophers and historians have attempted to understand the nature of man and the real purpose of man’s existence. They have wondered why man cannot live in peace and what will man’s final destination be? The Bible alone supplies us with all of the answers for these questions. David in the verse we have put above ponders the significance of mankind and why we are of any importance to God.

When David reflected on the heavens and saw the moon, the stars and all that God has created, he felt very insignificant. He asked the question, why would he be of any importance to God and why would God even care that he existed? But we know now from reading the scriptures that God is merciful to each one of us and from the beginning He had a plan and a purpose for every person.

Man was created on the sixth day and placed on this planet which was specifically designed for him. He was given a body and a soul that made him fit for dominion over the planet He created for man. God gave man the responsibility to tend to it and to care for it.

God first created Adam, and then Eve to be his partner and helpmate. They were given the freedom of will and commanded not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They were also given the gift of a spoken language. Then Eve was lured by Satan through his half-truths and misquotations of God’s Word. Both Adam and Eve chose to disobey God’s commandment and therefore they sinned against God. And the bad news is that they brought down the future of the human race with them.

God then sent His Son to die on the cross to pay the penalty for all the sins of all mankind. All we have to do is accept Jesus as our Savior, ask for forgiveness and then build daily on our relationship with Him.

To those who believe in God and Jesus He has given His Biblically commanded duties. They are to love God, to love one another, have joy in glorifying God, worship Him in holiness and honor the Son just as we are to honor the Father.

The Bible also clearly answers the question as to the final destiny of man. Man has a choice. If he chooses death he will spend eternity in hell. If he chooses God’s way he will spend eternity with God in heaven. Have you made your decision to accept Jesus as your Savior? If so you will spend eternity with God in heaven.

We can be assured that we are not insignificant to God. We know this because first of all we are His creation. Not only did He create us but He loves each one of us. He loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die to free us from our debt of sin, and He is now preparing an eternal home where we will live forever with Him.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Isaiah 40:31.

Those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.

PRAYER:

Thank You for being mindful of me and caring for me even though I am unworthy. Although I am a sinner You sent Your only Son from heaven to rescue me from paying the penalty for my sins and to give me the precious gift of eternal life. I rejoice in being saved by Your grace.

February 18, 2016

Light: February 18, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR THURSDAY FEBRUARY 18, 2016.
LIGHT

DEFINITION:

Something that makes things visible or affords illumination; exposure to truth.

SCRIPTURE:

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. Ephesians 5:8.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

There is no doubt that we are living in a dark and sinful world. Darkness is a sign of evil and the world today for the most part is evil. Satan, the evil one, is running free in our world. Many people today live in situations where God is never acknowledged and where a Christian’s faith is mocked and godless living is applauded.

In most religions light is a symbol of God and godliness and Christianity and the Bible is no exception. We read in I John 1:5 that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. Not only is God light but He is the giver of light to the world. James reminds us in James 1:17 that God is the “Father of the heavenly lights”. Yes God created the sun, the moon, and the stars to give physical light to the world.

And God sent His Son to this earth to give spiritual light to the world. In John 8:12 it reads what Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” John the Baptist said in John 1:9 that Jesus was coming into the world to be the true light for everyone. And in Psalms 119: 105 it reads that His Word (the Bible) is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Yes, without light there is darkness.

In the dark we cannot see. Jesus said, “The man who works in the dark does not know where he is going” John 12:25. It is the light of God’s Word that shows us the way.

As believers, Jesus told us what our role is in Matthew 5:14, “We are the light of the world.” After we have accepted Jesus as our Savior, we are no longer in darkness and we are then to walk as children of light. God expects us to represent Him in this world. We are to represent the opposite of evil and darkness and we need to share the good news of a light in a darkened world, that light being Jesus.

Darkness and light are completely opposite. Darkness represents the evil side of life and light represents the good. Sinful man loves the darkness because their deeds are evil and they hate the light of Jesus, because Jesus is truth and He exposes their evil deeds (John 3:20).

LEARNING:

Those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.

PRAYER:

Father, I thank You that You are my light and my salvation. Help me to be a bright light for you in this dark and evil world that I live in. May I be an example to my family, my friends and neighbors so that they will be able to see the difference between living in the light and living in darkness.

February 17, 2016

Leave: February 17, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 17, 2016.
LEAVE

DEFINITION:

Go away from; abandon; quit; stop doing; postpone; desist from.

SCRIPTURE:

I will never leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews 13:5

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

The one thing that we remember vividly from when we were small children was that we did not like to be left alone. There was a sense of security when our parents, even just one of them, were with us but when they left for some reason it was scary.

As believers we have a promise that our Father in heaven will never leave us. In the verse above from Hebrews when He says He will never leave us he means that He will be with us at all times and through every situation we face in life. Just think what that means. God gives to each of us that believe in Him everything. He is almighty, all powerful, all knowing and thus all of His attributes are with us at all times because he is always with us. As a child of God no attribute of God can be kept away from us. What a terrific promise that He has given us.

It is so important that a person who believes in Jesus understands that when God makes a promise and says He will never leave us, He keeps His word and the promise is intended for all who believe in Him. Whatever God says to one person and it is recorded in the scriptures it is intended for all generations that follow.

Just before the Israelites entered the promised land, Moses gave them this promise from the Lord as recorded in Deuteronomy 31:5-4: “Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” After Moses died, God gave this same promise to Joshua in Joshua 1:5 saying: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

What a wonderful assurance this promise is for us today. We are assured that just as God was with the Children of Israel in their tough battles, He will be with us in our every situation we face.

When God gave the Word to Abraham and when He gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, He gave it to all, including you and me. God is not a respecter of persons. He wants us all to share in His love and His promises. We have the blessed assurance that He will always be with us through thick and thin. He will never leave us.

February 16, 2016

Knowledge: February 16, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR TUESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 2016.
KNOWLEDGE

DEFINITION:

Awareness of facts; truth or principles; what is known; a body of accumulated facts; the sum of what has been earned or discovered.

SCRIPTURE:

You shall keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

The vast amount of knowledge that is available today compared to even ten years ago is mind boggling. Our grandchildren are studying subjects that were not only unavailable to us but we never even heard about them.

Also the tools available to people today were unheard of years ago. We remember having to go to the library, going through the books available that were already outdated. But today we have computers and all one has to do is type in a few words and vast amounts of information is right at our finger tips.

Having said all this, we must consider how little mankind really knows compared to our all-knowing God. It was Thomas Edison, the prolific inventor, who said that, “We do not know one-millionth part of one per cent about anything. We do not know what water is. We do not know what light is. We do not know what electricity is. We do not know what gravity is. We have a lot of hypotheses, but that is all.” The more we know the more we realize how little we know.

Isaiah answers a question for us as to why people study filling their minds with all manner of knowledge yet feel dissatisfied and have a desire for more. Isaiah says in Isaiah 26:3, “Peace comes when our mind is steadfastly focused on the Lord and we put our trust in the Lord.” Furthermore Isaiah said that the peace we have is PERFECT peace.

The Bible predicts a vast increase in knowledge in the days before Christ returns for believers in the rapture. So are you ready for that day or are you still searching for more knowledge or even still searching for that relationship that is most important for all, a personal relationship with Jesus. The only way you can be ready is to know that you have accepted Jesus as your Savior.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Isaiah 40:31.

Those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.

PRAYER:

We stop and praise You for Your knowledge and power. We thank You for all the knowledge You have given us. It is our prayer that you will guide us to use the knowledge that You have given us to draw people close to You. Help us to grow daily in understanding what You want from us and may our walk and talk show others how much they need a relationship with You.

February 15, 2016

Marriage: February 15, 2016

TODAY’S WORD FOR MONDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2016.
MARRIAGE

DEFINITION:

The legal union of a man and a woman; the social institution under which a man and woman live as husband and wife by legal or religious commitments.

SCRIPTURE:

He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor of the Lord. Proverbs 18:22.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

In just a few months we will have been married for 59 years. We both can look back and remember the day we were married and all the events that preceded our marriage. Our parents had prepared us for marriage from a Biblical perspective. Watching how our parents lived and walked during their married life set a positive example for us.

Marriage is ordained by God and is to be honored by all believers. Honor means highly esteemed. God intended marriage to be the most precious, warm, tender, and dearest of relationships.

During the marriage ceremony two people, husband and wife take a vow that they will be faithful and true to one another as long as they both shall live. The marriage vow as ordained by God is to be a life-long commitment. A commitment is a promise and a promise comes with an obligation to work to fulfill that promise.

Unfortunately, what we see today is that people no longer fulfill their commitments. There is also a “throw away” mentality that if we do not like something we throw it away and get a new one. Thus it is with marriage way to often. When problems in marriage arise there is no commitment to keep the promise made on the wedding day.

The apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:25, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church, and gave Himself for it.” And in Ephesians 5:31-32 Paul wrote, “For this cause shall man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall become one flesh.”

Paul is telling us that marriage unites two people so that they are no longer two entities but one single entity. This is a huge adjustment that newly married couples need to make because they have, before marriage, been used to having their own independence and they did what they wanted to do. After marriage it changed from, “I want” to “What you want?” and this is an adjustment with great rewards. When two begin working together for common goals that they agree upon to benefit each other a true union is developed. The strength of a marriage is dependent upon unity.

The key to a long and successful marriage is for both spouses to commit their lives first to God and then to each other. We must read the Bible daily, pray daily, tithe our income and press on daily to serve our Lord. God’s promise is found in I Samuel 2:30, “for them that honor Me, I will honor.”

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Isaiah 40:31.

Those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.

PRAYER:

Thank You for Your promise that You will put Your blessing upon our marriage if we promise to love You and put our trust in You and honor You in our lives.
