Peace: October 6, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR TUESDAY OCTOBER 6, 2015.

PEACE

DEFINITION:

Calm and quiet; freedom from troubling emotions or thoughts.
SCRIPTURE:

I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

How do you maintain a sense of peace and spiritual balance when trials strike you. From time to time it is good to sit back and take stock as to how you handle difficulties when they come your way.

The verse above from Psalms 4 was written by David in a time of great distress. David was distressed as a result of his son’s betrayal and rebellion. Absalom had secretly and cunningly won over the hearts and support of a large number of the people and set himself up as king. Absalom was coming after David with his army so David had to flee for his life. The stress was causing David to be restless and awake at night.

David knew from past experience where to seek peace from his distress and find relief. In Psalm 4:1 David prays and asks God for relief from his stress. He prays confidently because he knows the Lord hears when we call to Him (verse 3). In verse 8 he writes that he will be down in peace and will sleep well because he knew the Lord would keep him safe throughout the night. God wants this same kind of confidence and peace to take root in us just like it had with David.

We can have peace with God when we have a close relationship with Him. We are reminded of the old song we always sang in church written by Helen Lemmel. It was, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.” This song contained a vital and exciting truth: an unshakeable peace is available to all who turn the eyes of their heart to Jesus.

Chances are that when adversity strikes your life one of the first thoughts you have is why? Then how do you respond? You can fret or rely on your decision making. But the best reaction is to turn the eyes of your heart to Jesus, the one who holds all comfort and security firmly within His grasp.

If you face anxiety in your life over an issue, first of all you need to recognize what anxiety is the complete opposite of peace. Anxiety has the ability to leave us helplessly bundled up in worry and fear. If we cave in to this pressure we lose our spiritual focus and mindset and we lose our ability to function. The only key to overcoming anxiety is found in the presence of God.

Now read the other verse we have put above from the book of John. What would you give to experience every day the peace that God can give you? You need to be willing to lay down your anger, fear and frustrations that haunt you. God knows the hurt you are feeling and if you will trust Him He will remind you that he has not forgotten you and stands ready to heal your troubled heart.

The safest place for you to be when trials come your way is in the arms of Jesus. David had a divine, unshakeable peace within his heart that God would protect him and fulfill His promises to him. God wants you to have that same peace.

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in Psalm 23:6.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
PRAYER:

My prayer today is that Your peace may invade my heart so that I can put every issue, large or small, that I face into Your hands. Thank You for Your promise to keep me and deliver me into the Father’s loving arms.
