Ask: July 9, 2015

TODAY’S WORD FOR THURSDAY JULY 9, 2015.

ASK

DEFINITION:

Put a question to; interrogate; seek to obtain; request; invite; inquire about.
SCRIPTURE:

And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. Mathew 21:22.

So I say to you, ask, and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Luke 11:9-10.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Many people ask this question. Why does God want us to ask when He already knows what we want and what we need? It is true that God knows the desires of our heart and what we think we need and could just give these things to us but God desires that we recognize that we are insufficient to meet our every need. God wants us to ask because He wants us to ask and seek Him so that we will recognize that He is the one who provides for us and that He alone hears and answers our prayers.

When we come to God in prayer we are not only acknowledging that He is the one who provides for us but that we are submitting our will to God’s will and putting God in control of our lives. God has given us free will and He never forces His will on us. It is through prayer that God speaks to us and shows us His will.

It is pride that keeps many from asking God for needs. And also many people today want to feel self-sufficient and do not feel that they need any help from God. One of the most important lessons we can learn from the scriptures is that God expects us to ask Him for help when we are in need.

Many people feel that God does not answer their prayers. One of the reasons is that they want immediate responses and just do not have the patience to wait upon the Lord for His timing. In John 14:14, Jesus says that we may ask for anything in His name and He will answer. But He also said in Matthew 21:22 that it is by believing we receive an answer to our prayers. But most people stop there and forget that God gives us standards to meet in order to receive His promises to us.

Several specifics are given to us. First, is that what we ask God for must not be contrary to His nature and righteousness. God will not answer prayers that are not according to His will and will not bring honor and glory to Him. Jesus teaches us that we are to obey Him and do what He commands us. If we are not willing to obey Him how can we expect Him to answer our prayers?

There is no request to big or to small that cannot be brought to God in prayer. The Lord wants us to pray about everything. The one problem today is that many people just limit God in what we believe He will do for us. We rely on our own wisdom and so often fail. (Philippians 4:6)

LEARNING:

Our memory verse for this week is found in John 1:1.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

PRAYER:

Open my eyes today to the reality that all I have to do is ask and believe. You desire to meet all my needs and I thank You for this. Keep me yielded to You so that I will seek to do Your will and not my own.
