TODAY’S WORD FOR MONDAY JULY 6, 2015.
ARGUING
To present a reason for or against a thing; oral disagreement; dispute; to persuade or compel by reasoning.
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. James 4:1-2.
Pride only breeds quarrels. Proverbs 13:10.
Do all things without complaining and disputing. Philippians 2:14.
But avoid foolish disputes, for they are unprofitable and useless. Titus 3:9.
The four scriptures we have listed above are a complete sermon in themselves. It tells us exactly what God thinks of arguing. But it seems that people do love to argue, even believers in Jesus who know these scriptures.
Take the time to listen to conversations of two or more people around you and you will soon hear them arguing about anything and everything. This is true among families, neighbors and friends. It is human nature to argue and some people just like to argue for arguments sake.
Even after we become Christians, we have to contend with our sinful nature. Pride is a big factor in arguments. Both parties, in an argument, think they are right and they want it their way. They so believe that they are right they will verbally fight and argue until they are sure they “won” or the other party quits and walks away. But unfortunately, most arguments have bad endings. They lead to the breakup of marriages, loss of jobs, loss of friendships and even in some cases physical harm.
When we argue we are fulfilling a sinful desire. We can conquer our sinful desires by submitting to God and ask Him to take away our pride and change our attitude. When we know Jesus and put our trust in Him, we are expected to do all things without complaining and disputing.
In the verse we have put above from James we see that he asks a question: “What causes fights and quarrels?” He gives us an answer: “You want something and do not get it.” All of us are self-centered but Jesus desires us to be love centered. Jesus desires that we love one another. Not only does He desire that we love one another but He commands it. “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you” John 15:2. These desires come from within us because of our sinful and corrupt natures. Think about the truth that Paul gives us in Titus 3:9: “Foolish disputes are profitless and useless.”
Our memory verse for this week is found in John 1:1.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Give me the strength today to avoid foolish disputes in my life. Help me, dear Lord, to live my life without complaining or arguing with someone. May others see Christ through my life and through my response to issues that in the past have led to arguments. Give me kindness and wisdom to face every issue that comes my way today.
